2004-2005 A Year in Review

It’s been a great year for Splitrock. Membership exceeded 45 hams in Northwest New Jersey.

Monthly VE Sessions, coordinated by Sid (K2GG) have continued to generate new hams many who go on to become members of Splitrock.

The 2005 Hamfest Chaired by Vince (KC2LAV) was an overwhelming success. We had a record number of booths sold and attendance was extremely good. Plans are already under way for the 2006 Hamfest to be held Saturday, March 4th again at the PAL. We hope to be using the larger hall this year to be able to accommodate more exhibitors.

The club offered a presentation about the new Morris County Trunked Radio System.

We held our first kit night. Bruce (N2XP) supplied the materials to build a 2m or 6m portable antenna. Future kit nights are planned for the October and November meetings.

The club supported the March of Dime walk-a-thon and Mount Olive PD with over 10 operators.

We organized a great Field Day. Over 20 club members participated in this 24-hour event. Kudos to Dave (N3UXK) for keeping us very well fed. We are anticipating a new location next year at Horseshoe Lake in Roxbury.

We fielded 13 operators for the ITC Triathlon.

We are pleased to announce the creation of the Jack Smith Equipment Fund in honor of Jack N2RCT SK. Often described as the voice of Splitrock, broadcasting from the hub of Morris County, Jack was the first contact for many new hams visiting our repeater. The fund was created with the knowledge and approval of his family. The Splitrock Board has made the first contribution to the fund.

The purpose of this fund is to provide loaner radios to new hams until they purchase their own equipment. We intend to purchase several 2M/440 rigs both new and used with mag mount antennas. Upon successful completion of an exam we will offer new hams the use of a radio for up to 90 days. Policies and procedures for this fund are being created.

Our VE team will promote this program at our monthly sessions.  If you know of other new hams in need of this program they should be directed to me. Membership in Splitrock is not mandatory but will be encouraged.

Additional donations earmarked for this fund can be sent to the attention of Ken Eicher at POB 610- Rockaway, NJ 07866. We encourage your support of this worthy program.

Jack will also be remembered at a special ceremony at our upcoming hamfest.

Congratulations to Bruce Lordi (N2XP) of Flanders, New Jersey.  He is the winner of the 2003 ARRL Hudson Division  Amateur of the Year Award.

A well rounded Amateur, Bruce has been described as "Mr. Fixit".

He owns his own calibration company with modernized calibrated test equipment and has been able to help fellow hams with repairs on HT's, mobile equipment and the local repeater systems in Northwest New Jersey.  Bruce is always ready to help hams with their technical problems and always enjoys the challenge of new ideas.  Bruce gives countless hours to elmering and teaching others about technology whether it be ham or computer related.

He has inspired many to try PSK31, APRS, HF, VHF and Solar, just to name a few.  The list is endless!  Bruce’s interest is not just in the technical side of radio.  He is very involved in his club’s Field Day activities and works with his OEM, keeping the Roxbury EOC radio equipment up to state and federal standards.

The Committee felt, because of the wide range of his volunteer activities, Bruce was a unanimous choice for Amateur of the Year.
